5/18/12

Nice morning, woke up early, tried numerous times to get on line this morning with no luck.  Although breakfasts are usually light this morning I made Burg’s French toast from the book “A Homemade Life” (thanks Cyndee for the book  it has great recipes), they are the best although using whole wheat vs French bread the egg mixture does not soak in as much but they are still excellent.  I have a feeling we are going to have to place an order for more Bushee Farm Maple syrup when we get to Grenada.  We did a dinghy tour of the harbor and did a little shopping.  

Doug came over for dinner as he made a reservation at Chez Walkerwhen he found out we were arriving, we sharing stories (and some excellent wine, thanks Doug) from when we were last together in Beaufort, NC.  I cooked up the last of the barracuda using a modified grouper finger recipe with pasta and a green salad, dessert was the coconut maple crème brulle.

5/19/12

We decided to do some exploring of the reefs around the island, so we pulled anchor and sailed by jib to a small bay just north of the ferry dock.  Doug sailed to meet us with his friend Erin who had us move to another bay even further north where the snorkeling would be much better.  And yes it was a beautiful snorkel, saw turtles, an artificial reef, and at the far end of the bay a natural reef.  There was a bit of a current and the return trip was very aerobic, we stopped to rest on the beach where there was the cutest and smallest dog I have ever seen, they are called teacup dogs, this one was not bigger than a softball.  The bays around the island have free moorings for a couple of reasons, one is so any coral would not get destroyed and two there are unexploded ordinances that if you were to drop anchor or drag anchor across one it could explode, that would be quite the wake up call.  Had a beautiful quiet evening, Doug had to sail Erin back and we ended up being the only boat in the bay.

5/20/12

Nice morning had some rain which helped to wash the salt off the boat.  We moved to another bay still further north and picked up a mooring.  The reef here was just beyond our mooring and easily enjoyed from the boat although we did use the dinghy off the point because of the current, for safety we always leave one person on board while the other(s) snorkel in case the current sweeps one away or if a predator bigger than you becomes an issue.  So far the reef here was the most spectacular we have seen so far, we also enjoyed watching a spotted ray.  I will never tire of scenes like what we enjoyed today.  For dinner we cooked up the last trigger fish from the freezer which was excellent.  Unfortunately this part of the island waters is in a reserve so we cannot take fish, lobster or conch.

5/21/12

Had a lot of rain in the morning, when it cleared we headed back to the bay on the west side of Dewey and was able to get wifi to place orders for more parts we needed, most importantly for our radar unit that still is out of order.  Went and visited with Darrell and Ann on “Alibi” and then had dinner at Mamacita’s.

5/22/12

Topped off our fuel and water today and did some last minute internet stuff and a little shopping.  We plan on heading out again to some new bay nearby not sure which until we see where the wind blows us.  You may have notice spot has us moving around a lot, it is really great here.  We will be looking to go somewhere outside the preserve so we can do some fishing as we are out of fish.  Culebra has been one of the places we have wanted to visit for a long time so we are going to make the most of it until we have to move on.
